Bruin Learn / Canvas underwent scheduled enhancement from the vendor on Saturday, August 17, 2024. With this update, instructors can disable threaded replies in Discussions. When this setting is enabled, students can respond to the discussion prompt, but others cannot reply to their responses. This allows instructors to restrict discussions to initial responses only, when needed.
If you are an instructor, instructional designer, or otherwise responsible for creating discussions, please review the discussion settings for all your current and upcoming classes. For guidance, consult the "How do I edit a discussion in a course?" lesson in the Canvas Instructor Guide.
In the discussion settings, navigate to the "Options" section and locate the "Disallow threaded discussions" checkbox:
- Check the box to create a flat, non-threaded discussion. This setting prevents users from replying to other students' responses and requires them to reply directly to the main discussion topic.
- Uncheck the box to enable a threaded discussion, allowing students to respond to each other's replies.
After making any changes, be sure to scroll down and click "Save." Please note that Canvas may not always retain your settings when copying course content from a previous term. Verify and adjust the settings as necessary to ensure they align with your preferences.
