Message for iClicker Classic Users: Instructions - iClicker Free for Instructors and Students Starting Summer 2023

Dear Instructors,

We are writing to let you know about the recent Bruin Post announcement regarding iClicker. This message is being sent to you as you are someone who is currently using iClicker Classic or has used it within the past year.

Starting June 20, 2023, instructors and students will be able to use the web-based and mobile versions of iClicker Cloud, an interactive polling tool used widely across UCLA, at no cost. Previously, students had to either purchase a physical iClicker remote or a buy a subscription to use the iClicker with their own device (laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.).

Please take note of the important information below if you plan to use iClicker.

Sunsetting iClicker Classic

iClicker Cloud will be replacing iClicker Classic as the single supported instructor software for classes starting in January 2024.

iClicker Classic Sunsetting Timeline of Transition

Starting December 18th, 2023, MacMillan, the vendor who provides iClicker Classic will:

  • Disable the iClicker Classic Student mobile app connection.
  • Remove technical support offerings, training, and bug fixes.
  • Disable all LMS integration options.
  • Disable registering a remote on iClicker.com.

How do you migrate from iClicker Classic to iClicker Cloud?

Logging in using your account and using your UCLA Credentials

On Tuesday June 20, 2023, faculty and students will be able to access their iClicker account by signing in with their UCLA username and password. For more information about signing into iClicker using SSO (Single Sign-On), review the following help guides:

What about Wi-Fi stability?
It is recommended to connect to the eduroam network. When signing into eduroam, use your UCLA Logon ID with @ucla.edu appended to it as your username  (UCLALogonID@ucla.edu) and your usual UCLA Logon password. If you encounter any issues connecting to eduroam, please refer to the troubleshooting tips in the following article:

What are the benefits of moving to iClicker Cloud?

  • Bruin Learn Roster and Grade Sync: Similar to iClicker Classic’s LMS sync, iClicker Cloud’s Roster and Grade Sync integration downloads the roster from the grade book and automatically matches it with students' email addresses. Roster & Grade Sync allows you to quickly and easily pull your learning management system roster into iClicker Cloud and send your iClicker Cloud grades directly to your Bruin Learn gradebook.
  • Student Study Tools: iClicker Cloud software automatically creates study tools for students, such as flashcards and practice quizzes, based on the questions that instructors ask in class. Even if students are using physical iClicker remotes, they can still log into their iClicker accounts from a browser and use these tools.
  • More Question Types: iClicker Cloud offers additional question types including Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, Short Answer, Numeric, and Target.

Remember, you are limited to the lowest featured device (ie: if a student has an iClicker+ and everyone else has a mobile device, you’ll only be able to ask multiple-choice questions).

Can I still use physical remotes?

It's important to note that UCLA will be discouraging the use of physical remotes for several reasons:

  • The iClicker Mobile Student App and Web App options provide more versatile question types than just multiple choice.
  • Purchasing the physical device can be a financial burden for many students.

If you have a specific pedagogical rationale for the use of remotes and would like to explore how to obtain devices for your class, please reach out to bruinlearn-support@it.ucla.edu to discuss in more detail.
